I am writing this having come right off of a trip create some content for Instagram. Erik and I went out to Millstream Gardens State Park in Ironton, Missouri. Millstream Gardens is home to the Saint Francois River. Inside of the park, you can find some rough terrain full of very large rocks and boulders. The river runs through these rocks and creates prime smallmouth habitat. The hike to get our spot was less than a mile, however, the rocks posed a challenge, especially with all the tackle, rods, and camera gear we were carrying.
This made me think: does physical fitness play a part in your success in the outdoors? When it comes to fishing, I would say yes and no. No because the head knowledge you need to be successful catching fish has no relation to fitness. I would say because many times when I am fishing, it requires me to be on my feet all day long. If you are primarily a bank fishermen, getting to your spots may also require a high level stamina. Standing all day long also takes a tole on your legs. If you fish all day long, you will have more energy at the end of the day when you are in better shape.
Another instance I can think of is kayak fishing: primarily using a paddle or pedal drive. Both of these require a great deal of endurance to reach those far away or hard to get to spots. The more energy you have when you reach those spots, the better you will be able to execute on catching fish.
I know lots of fishermen are also hunters. Hunting is also a sport that requires a person to be in solid physical shape. Dragging a deer out of the woods by yourself, on foot, is no easy task. What better way to be prepared than to be in good shape going into the hunt?
To wrap up, the level of your fitness will have a large impact on the experience you have in the outdoors. You don't have to be training for the Mr. Olympia, but having a generally good level of physicality improve all area of your life. After all is said and done, the quality of your will be better and you will be happier if you are in shape. You might even catch a few more bass while you're at it!
Love the Adventure!
